MARADONA PRAISE FRANCESC(21 june 2006)

FRANCESC FABREGAS has received the highest praise possible, from no other than Diego Maradona.

Maradona is regarded by many as the greatest footballer ever, and single-Handel helped Argentina win the World Cup in 1986.

The former Argentina number 10 was watching the clash between Spain and Tunisia, when Fabregas came on the pitch as a substitute and was instrumental in a Spanish comeback to win 3-1 after being 1-0 down and looking void of ideas.

Maradona said of the Arsenal midfielder: "I hope he carries on playing football like that.

"He was spectacular.

"Cesc gave Spain the final ball that it was lacking in the first half."

Fabregas himself has been modest with the comments from Maradona, saying: "I always try to play my game, I try to do my best on every occasion.

"I was lucky against Tunisia, we scored three goals and we came back with a result.

"It was very difficult."

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso was also full of praise for his 19-year-old team mate: "I'm not surprised because we know what he can do, we see what he does in training every day.

"So his performance is not a big surprise.

"He is not fazed by the World Cup.

"He is very young but he shows a maturity on the pitch, and has the ability to show what a great player he is and how important he is to us.

"He has an old head on young shoulders, as they say in England."
